A study from Cell & Bioscience published coffee has positive resistant to Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2). The study revealed that drinking one cup coffee per day was associated with a 10% lower Covid-19 risk among the United Kingdom Biobank participants. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
The team observed that ground and instant coffee inhibited the activity of transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2), and they tested whether ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression could be regulated. To this end, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) HepG2 cells and Huh7 cells, which express high levels of ACE2 and TMPRSS2, respectively, were treated with varying concentrations of coffee. This significantly reduced ACE2 and TMPRSS2 transcript and protein levels.
Next, the team evaluated how additives in coffee, such as cream, low fat, milk, and sugar, affect its potency. This showed that additives had no impact on the inhibitory effects of coffee. Therefore, coffee can help us creating positive resistant to Covid-19. Enjoy your great coffee!
